Celebrating 40 Years of CCR: A Legacy of Excellence in Rheumatology Conferences

Starting back in 1983

A History We Are Proud Of

The Congress of Clinical Rheumatology, previously known as Rheumatology on the Beach, started in 1983 as a Rheumatology Update course in Birmingham, Alabama, organized by David McLain, M.D. with the guidance of Charles Porter, M.D. There were two successful meetings in Birmingham, but limited interest from physicians outside of Alabama. As a result, in 1985, the meeting was moved to Destin, Florida and renamed “Rheumatology on the Beach,” with half-day sessions to allow time for participants to enjoy the surroundings. The meeting has since grown significantly, with physicians attending from various parts of the world. In 2022, 1300+ physicians and practitioners, mostly specializing in rheumatology, attended the meeting from 45 states, 6 provinces of Canada, and 11 countries, with many considering it the best meeting they attend all year.

Celebrating 40 Years of Rheumatology Education

The Congress of Clinical Rheumatology (CCR) celebrates its 40th anniversary, marking four decades of commitment to advancing rheumatology education. Founded in 1983 by Drs. Pam and David McLain in Birmingham, Alabama, CCR has grown into a leading independent rheumatology conference, now hosted in Destin, Florida. With a focus on practical and applicable training, CCR draws over 1,300 participants globally, reflecting its impact and dedication to excellence.

The congress also supports the next generation of rheumatologists through the North American Young Rheumatology Investigator Forum (NYRIF), established by Dr. Pam McLain to provide a platform and support for young researchers. In 2018, CCR expanded with CCR West in San Diego, broadening access to its educational offerings on the West Coast.

Looking ahead, CCR remains committed to evolving and serving the rheumatology community, embodying a legacy of innovation and community spirit for the next 40 years and beyond.
